A grassroots movement
to end sex trafficking
Delhi, July 23 – Apne Aap Women Worldwide (AAWW), an organization working to fight sex trafficking, organized a free health camp on 22nd July, in Khaira Village in Najafgadh District in the outskirts of Delhi- under the Mission Convergence Program of the Govt. of Delhi . This health camp was organized mainly for the people living in the ‘Harijan Basti’ of this village. The theme of the camp was Aneamia.
The focus of the health camp was the Harijan community vulnerable due to low socio-economic status. Around 200 people from the Harijan Basti attended this health camp, including women between the ages of 13-70 and children of all ages. Many senior citizens also attended the camp. A general physician, a pediatrician and a gynecologist provided medical service at the camp. Another NGO, Pariwar Seva Sanstha, which provides a range of affordable health services, set up a pathology lab to test anemia in women and provide iron tablets to those in need. A dispensary was set up to provide all the prescribed medications. A “Legal Support” Counter was also set up with an advocate ready to help any of the women who came to her with problems like domestic violence, dowry, property issues etc.
Even though it was a health camp, the atmosphere was very lively and active. The women who came to the camp were very happy and satisfied with the services that they were given. “This is great. I have been having so many problems like cough, fever and body ache for almost a month and the hospital is so far away I have not been able to go. I am sure these medicines will help. The doctor also assured me that I would get better soon” says Rina of Khaira village and mother of two. The women who came to the camp were informed that they could avail the follow up services at the Apne Aap centre in Hasanpur where the doctors visit once a week.
Apne Aap will be organizing many health camps in all their centers across the country over the next month. The enthusiasm and cooperation that was received from the community in Khaira Village is motivation enough to organize many more such camps.
